She was inspired by The Case for Mars to dedicate her life to landing explorers on the red planet, completing a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Waterloo and a master's degree in electrical engineering and planetary sciences at Western University. A Malaysian citizen by birth, she traveled on her own to Canada at the age of 15 to get closer to the cutting edge of the space industry. Jess is also an avid environmentalist, human rights activist, and die-hard science fiction lover. She was part of a simulated Mars mission at the Mars Desert Research Station as part of Crew 228 (mdrs228.com). With the Mars Society of Canada, she applied her enthusiasm for space exploration and growing command of engineering principles to research and development projects, writing for the website, and more. As part of a core group of volunteers, she supported MSC activities and operations.
