Alaa Salah Afifi

Alaa Salah is a physicist, educator, and Astro researcher with professional experience in the fields of astrophysics, cosmology, and space sciences.
Alaa has participated in international space and research projects and is an expert review board member at NASA Lifelines, and is part of the World’s Biggest Analogue Missions Exploration in Space – WBA. But her space exploration interests extend to being a curriculum developer with the Mars Explorer Program in Canada, and creating educational resources that will hopefully inspire the next generation of space scientists. She also contributes to various citizen science projects, such as Japan’s Galaxy Cruise project and NASA’s Zooniverse programs.

She researches everything from supermassive black hole formation to nuclear star clusters, microgravity, and even the environmental impacts brought forth by sustainable rocketry. Alaa has interned at institutions including Deep Space Initiative in Denver, Colorado, contributing to the Andromeda Project, and Resolute Lab India, contributing to avionics research.

The service of Alaa has also been recognized in international scientific forums. She has been an invited speaker in events such as the International Summit on Condensed Matter Physics, Space FUTA Club, and ISCMP2023, where she gave state-of-the-art research on neuroscience and space exploration. Her passion for open science, sustainability, and space education is palpable through her work at organizations such as the Space Generation Advisory Council, Women in Aerospace, Barcelona.

The African Network of Women in Astronomy has also celebrated her work.She featured in their flagship AFNWA Story Book, in celebration of her contribution to space science and research, combining influential women in astronomy all over Africa. The feature on this platform says a lot about her as one of the most impactful women in astronomy on the continent.

From this perspective, Alaa has achieved records in space research, has constantly contributed towards sustainable space exploration and fosters state-of-the art scientific findings with the commitment of ensuring international cooperation.
